Recycled Asphalt

  • Reconstituted Bitumen also known as Recycled Asphalt is a product made from pre-existing asphalt / bitumen road surfaces, as well as left over product from the creation of new ‘hot mix’ roads. These raw materials are then re-crushed via an impact crusher back to their pre-existing gravel form (particle sizes are minus 20mm).
  • Reconstituted Bitumen is then laid by bobcat at a minimum of 60mm (pre-compaction / approximately 50mm post compaction) preferably on a compacted limestone or similar sub base. If there is no existing sub base Reconstituted Bitumen can be laid directly onto compacted sand at a thickness of 100mm pre compaction.
  • Reconstituted Bitumen is to then be ‘water rolled’ using a twin drum roller to ‘reactivate’ the bituminous binding process and provide adequate compaction.
  • Once laid and allowed to dry (usually 1-2 days, weather dependent) Reconstituted Bitumen forms a sealed flexible and permeable surface with no more dust, weeds, sludge or ongoing maintenance. This surface will continue to harden further over the summer months and benefits from traffic.
  • We pride ourselves on our finish of our Reconstituted Bitumen driveways and DO NOT use diesel/kerosene or any other solvents in the laying/rolling process. Using such solvents softens the bitumen initially but reacts in a way that means it will never fully harden again properly.
